Winston John McCarthy

ed. Mitchelltown; St Thomas’s; St Patrick’s College 1923-25, XV ’24.

Played club rugby in Palmerston North, representing Manawatu B, before moving to Pahiatua. Later played in Masterton then rugby league for Waiuta on West Coast in 1936. Joined radio in Wellington in 1937 and commenced broadcasting rugby in 1942, official broadcaster during 1945/46 Kiwis Army Team tour.

Regular rugby commentator of Test matches through until end of 1959. Also covered 1950 and 1954 Commonwealth Games and 1956 Olympic Games. Best known for his trademark call “Listen…! It’s a goal!”.

Continued to call club and provincial rugby until early 1970s.
